What’s the best way to show a girl you love her? Sure, you could always buy her an iPad, but why not build her one?

Chinese art student, Wei Xinlong wanted to show his commitment to his long distance girlfriend by building her a touchscreen tablet PC for their daily video chat dates. This way when he leaves for Shenzhen to work, they’ll be able to keep in touch easier.

As a student in Northeas Normal University in Changchun, Jilin, Wei was familiar with electronics and engineering and found most answers to questions he had online. He bought most of the parts of the device in second-hand market and salvaged them from dismantled laptops. He even built some of the parts himself, such as a heat conductor made from an aluminum soda can and a chopstick. Wei dedicated himself to the device for 10 days before it was completed, and even managed to place an Apple logo with rhinestones on it.

The features on his “iPad” include a touchscreen, built in webcam, a microphone, four USB slots, LAN socket and runs on a lithium battery. It may be a step down from Apple’s top-selling product, but it still can read e-books, watch movies, listen to music and even play video games. And it only cost Wei 800 yuan ($126) to build compared to Apple’s iPad price of around $500.

Wei’s remarkable final product is truly a representation of his hard work and dedication. It will certainly reinforce his long-distance relationship as well as put boyfriends around the world to shame.
